Application Ideas
Here is a list of ideas for utilizing the SoundCloud API. Feel free to comment and add your own ideas!
Desktop apps
- Setting up a way for letting users access private tracks by submitting their email addresses.
- An uploading app that let’s you drag-and-drop any sound file to push it to the cloud & decide who has access to it.
- A file system plugin (fuse?) that lets you mount your SoundCloud account and add files to it by dragging and dropping.
- A little radio cloud (or maybe a dashboard widget) that plays music from your dashboard and/or the hotlist. It could show comments popping up while music is being played.
- A plugin for an audio editor letting you bounce files to the web from within the editor.
- A notifier that lets you know when your uploaded track has been processed and is available.
- A feed style app similar to Twhirl for Twitter where you can monitor your dashboard and listen to tracks right from your desktop.
- SoundCloud player plugin for Boxee, Plex, etc. so you can have tracks running on your home media center.
- A Tweetdeck-style app for running the SoundCloud dashboard on your desktop.
- Investigate possible ways of building export to SoundCloud into the operating system (i.e. like export to YouTube in Quicktime).
- Audio blogging inspired by http://audioboo.fm/.
- Upload from yousendit link using AP
- A Skype Contact you can send a track to, which will upload the sent track to your account. The Skype contact could also query you for Meta Information in an ELISA-styled chat procedure.
- A native app that uses beatmatching algorithms to match beats (uses the bpm meta-field) and blends them together. growl or similar for timed comments, uses api to pull tracks from tags, possibly through hotness filter+bpm
- A skitch-like application where you drag and drop files, they are always private and have a secret url (this needs a an api for our secret link)
- A SoundCloud add-on for Songbird
Web apps and mashups
- “The world music map”. A nice world map visualization where you can zoom in and listen to music that was created in that part of the world or tracks are are listened to a lot in this region. Tracks on a Map
- Listen to different citites CitySounds.fm
- A portal using SoundCloud for setting up and promoting remix competitions.
- Audio visualizer that uses the timed comments for textual-based artistic visualization at the right point in the track.
- Dropbox widget for WordPress.org/.com
- A Joomla 1.5 plugin
- Export and/or sync to MySpace: login with your myspace account on the app, which then syncs your latest tracks to the myspace artist-profile player in the background.
- “SoundCards”: Moocards+SoundCloud, invite codes for tracks with waveform displays and comments for the track on the card.
- An app that lets a limited amount of people discuss a track without the author seeing it. Ideal for a label that want to discuss the future of a track (release or not).
- An uploader for WordPress.
- A module for Drupal, Joomla!, etc. (i.e. open source content management).
- A module for Squidoo.
- Playdar resolver for SoundCloud.
- Moodbar analyzer for tracks.
Mobile apps
- Player app that syncs heard/unheard-markers and play-counts, and allows “Save to favorites” and commenting.
- App for setting the privileges for a SoundCloud track, i.e. the ability to share private tracks to people you meet by typing in their email or user name.
