Application Ideas

Here is a list of ideas for utilizing the SoundCloud API. Feel free to comment and add your own ideas!

Desktop apps

  • Setting up a way for letting users access private tracks by submitting their email addresses.
  • An uploading app that let’s you drag-and-drop any sound file to push it to the cloud & decide who has access to it.
  • A file system plugin (fuse?) that lets you mount your SoundCloud account and add files to it by dragging and dropping.
  • A little radio cloud (or maybe a dashboard widget) that plays music from your dashboard and/or the hotlist. It could show comments popping up while music is being played.
  • A plugin for an audio editor letting you bounce files to the web from within the editor.
  • A notifier that lets you know when your uploaded track has been processed and is available.
  • A feed style app similar to Twhirl for Twitter where you can monitor your dashboard and listen to tracks right from your desktop.
  • SoundCloud player plugin for Boxee, Plex, etc. so you can have tracks running on your home media center.
  • A Tweetdeck-style app for running the SoundCloud dashboard on your desktop.
  • Investigate possible ways of building export to SoundCloud into the operating system (i.e. like export to YouTube in Quicktime).
  • Audio blogging inspired by http://audioboo.fm/.
  • Upload from yousendit link using AP
  • A Skype Contact you can send a track to, which will upload the sent track to your account. The Skype contact could also query you for Meta Information in an ELISA-styled chat procedure.
  • A native app that uses beatmatching algorithms to match beats (uses the bpm meta-field) and blends them together. growl or similar for timed comments, uses api to pull tracks from tags, possibly through hotness filter+bpm
  • A skitch-like application where you drag and drop files, they are always private and have a secret url (this needs a an api for our secret link)
  • A SoundCloud add-on for Songbird

Web apps and mashups

  • “The world music map”. A nice world map visualization where you can zoom in and listen to music that was created in that part of the world or tracks are are listened to a lot in this region. Tracks on a Map
  • Listen to different citites CitySounds.fm
  • A portal using SoundCloud for setting up and promoting remix competitions.
  • Audio visualizer that uses the timed comments for textual-based artistic visualization at the right point in the track.
  • Dropbox widget for WordPress.org/.com
  • A Joomla 1.5 plugin
  • Export and/or sync to MySpace: login with your myspace account on the app, which then syncs your latest tracks to the myspace artist-profile player in the background.
  • “SoundCards”: Moocards+SoundCloud, invite codes for tracks with waveform displays and comments for the track on the card.
  • An app that lets a limited amount of people discuss a track without the author seeing it. Ideal for a label that want to discuss the future of a track (release or not).
  • An uploader for WordPress.
  • A module for Drupal, Joomla!, etc. (i.e. open source content management).
  • A module for Squidoo.
  • Playdar resolver for SoundCloud.
  • Moodbar analyzer for tracks.

Mobile apps

  • Player app that syncs heard/unheard-markers and play-counts, and allows “Save to favorites” and commenting.
  • App for setting the privileges for a SoundCloud track, i.e. the ability to share private tracks to people you meet by typing in their email or user name.
  • Template for a special artist app that can play latest songs, etc. Something similar to: http://www.ilike.com/manage?r=iPhone
