Open data by semantics

Many guitar voicing dictionaries exist on the web. So why bother starting off again ? If i had found a dictionnary that allowed accessing his data i would have linked to it, just adding my circle of fifths idea. Alas every guitar website is a walled garden nowadays. By making this OGVD accessible semantically, and if it’s accepted by the musician community, we may be able to stop this “rolling the rock on the top of the hill all over again” activity. Well for chords at least.

The circle is the ID

But aside from the openness, this c5 dictionary will be different by nature. I want to avoid chord names for accessing data. I know at least 5 ways to name a simple minor chord. Moreover, chords that share the same notes can be named completely differently like Cm7 and A6. The fondamental is just on another note but they do share the same voicings!

Let’s be pragmatic musi-mathematicians from now on : the c5 will be like the chord’s unique ID.

Chords names are the circle’s interpretation

The name of the chord will be used as an interpretation of the intervals that form the chord. Cause this is what it is! Every chord has a fonction in the context of the song. And this chord is not heard the same, depending on the fonction he has : if you play Cm7, you’re not playing a A6, even if the notes are the same. What you get is what you feel.

And now that we have parted the true chord (a sum of intervals) from its fonction, the circle from its interpretation, we have more flexibility and less redundant data. It’s kind of like the “separating data from it’s visualization” dogma in development.

See [[Interpretation]] for more information.

Notes names are the circle’s instantiation

Another advantage of using the circle is that we no longer have to call a chord like A7M but just like this :

It means that we can forget notes name too. It’s a “7M type chord”. Direct consequence is that the voicings is better off without reference to a note. Like this generic 7M type chord which can be played everywhere on the neck :
